Waste Management

2008-2009 USDA Grant Project

Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission (UVLSRPC) received a grant in 2008 through the Solid Waste Management Program of USDA Rural Development.

Each year the USDA Rural Development has grant funds available to identify and evaluate solutions to solid waste problems on a regional basis in rural areas related to collection, treatment, and disposal. This includes evaluating current landfill conditions to determine threats to water resouces, providing technical assistance and/or training to help communites reduce the solid waste stream. The program is for rural communities of up to 10,000 in population, and areas can combine for a multi-jurisdictional area such as the towns of Sullivan County.

UVLSRPC coordinated several leadership forums with speakers, and provided technical assistance to Sullivan County towns through transfer station operator education programs, transfer station operator lunch meetings, and legislative updates. In addition to the web site, towns were provided with assistance in developing recycling brochures for their facilities and a Special Waste brochure was printed to address materials that many towns may or may not collect. These are common wastes that can be hazardous to the environment if not properly managed.
