Waste Management

Pay-As-You-Throw

Pay-As-You-Throw has several names including unit pricing, unit-based pricing, and variable-rate pricing.  This is a system designed to encourage people to reduce their waste by charging more for more waste discarded.  Traditionally, residents pay for waste collection through property taxes or a fixed fee, regardless of how much or how little trash they throw away.  Pay-As-You-Throw or PAYT breaks that tradition by treating trash services just like electricity, gas, and other utilities. Households pay a variable rate depending on the amount of service they use.

Towns in the region that have PAYT systems include Piermont and Unity.  For more information on PAYT in the region, click here.
